Abstract: | The Kafue River in Northern Rhodesia comes into the news again for its riverine lands. The Kafue Flats, 150 miles long by 35 miles wide, have an area of 1.300.000 acres which are annually inundated. Dutch scientists proposed a scheme to make this land fit for farming. The Rhodesian Selection Trust Group of Companies is going to finance a pilot farm on the Flats. The scheme proposes the creation of 'polders' on the Dutch plan with canals, and divided into units of 160 acres downwards for Europeans and African holdings. It would allow for 3 years of crops, followed by 3 years under cattle. This scheme cannot be begun without considerable preliminary investigation through the pilot farm. |
