Abstract: | Partly because of the importance of the agricultural sector, but also because of the traditions of European economists, the majority of those doing economic research on African agriculture are interested in the agricultural sector rather than agricultural economists in the traditions of American Land Grant colleges and universities. The trends discussed in this paper apply to the broader rather than the narrower concept - to trends in the study of the economics of agriculture rather than the trends in the literature produced by agricultural economists: Theory - The role of agriculture - The role of exports-Means of accelerating agricultural growth-economic man - Planning - Unemployment and underemployment - Other topics - Methodology - Concluding observations.
