Abstract: | This paper applies multidate aerial photographs to the analysis of the effect of a changing route network (comprising roads, footpaths, and alleys) on accessibility to individual buildings in Ilorin, southwestern Nigeria, between 1949 and 1963. The development of routes and the changes in accessibility to buildings in Ilorin seem to suggest a pattern. First, footpaths provide communication among scattered buildings, but the density of both increases with time. Second, the demand for space becomes so great that some buildings are constructed blocking footpaths. Finally, almost all the footpaths disappear and are replaced by alleys. The critical point in improving accessibility to buildings seems to be the second stage. At this stage decisions should be made as to which footpaths are to be improved to motor able roads and which are to be kept as pedestrian thoroughfares. Ref. |
