Abstract: | A sector of Johannesburg that can reasonably be equated with a 'city-rich' sector from a Löschian landscape is selected as a study area for assessing the claim that intra-metropolitan areas are characterised by continua of shopping centres. The study area lies between Louis Botha and Bans Strydom Avenues with its apex in Braamfontein. The analysis of the 109 business centres is conducted using the frequency modulated relative homogeneity function and associated dendrograms. The results show that a structure not dissimilar from that found earlier in Cape Town exists and that it appears to accord well with the Löschian type of intra-metropolitan model of retail structure. App., fig., maps, notes, ref., sum. in French, German, and Afrikaans. |
