Abstract:After U.D.I., more than five years have passed and the Rhodesian economy has not caved in but has grown, despite the sanctions imposed by the U.N. To explain this refutation of the forecasts the author considers white Rhodesia in terms of the present rulers' ability to maintain the existing structure. There is a considerable growth of technological, administrative, and managerial skills in Rhodesia. Sanctions retarded the speed of economic development but did not break the economy. As for the political structure of white Rhodesia there was little friction between the soldiers, the civil servants, and the politicians. The oppositional parties were divided by struggles over personalities and over political strategy. The geography favours the defence against infiltration, so that it is unlikely that an international action will end the white minority regime. However, Rhodesia continues to be beset by far-reaching problems of ethnicity and a rapidly growing population. Notes.
