Abstract:Since its independence in October 1966 Lesotho was forced to become to an even greater extent than ever before the economic hostage of South Africa. It is clear that Lesotho will become more and more economically dependent upon South Africa - irrespective of the political party in power. The present situation of Lesotho is reviewed against the general background which the country presents. South Africa has a vested political and economic interest in maintaining good relations with Lesotho, and the economic prospects for Lesotho, on the other hand, are dim and in the short run it has virtually no hope of becoming economically viable or independent of South Africa and foreign aid.
