| Abstract: | The aim of this paper is to construct an ideal typology of witchcraft beliefs and accusations based on a combination of African and European data, and incorporating both psychological and sociological approaches to the subject. Two types of witch beliefs are distinguished: Type A: a person tends to fear others because he attributes to them his own aggressive impulses (projection of aggression). Type B: a person who fears to express his aggression towards the original object responsible for his frustration may express his aggression instead towards some other object (displacement of aggression).
