Abstract: | The author believes that African writers can, on the whole, write more serious fiction - in whatever languages they choose to do so - if they will cultivate a creative sensibility guided by a few simple truths: that language is more than just an order of words, and that they do not ensure the Africanness of their work simply by shuffling a few cultural habits between the native and the chosen tongues.
