Abstract:No creative writer can afford to ignore his roots in tradition, to which, consciously or unconsciously, he owes a great deal of debt. Comparison of the techniques of the traditional folktale with those of the modern short story (as handled by contemporary Africans) in an attempt to draw attention to the existence of techniques and aesthetic principles usually used in the performance of the folktale which may help the contemporary African writer of short stories to recapture in his writing the 'creative balance' which he has lost.
