Abstract:Food shortage in Nigeria has become real. The crisis generated by the shortage of rice in 1980 is a pointer to a more serious and widespread food problem unless care is taken. There have been various attempts to reduce the problems, especially from the mid-1970s. However, judging from the trend of food prices, the problem seems to be worsening. The author discusses the role and problems of agriculture, the declining agricultural production, government attempts at solving food problems and the impact of various policy measures. He concludes that the solution to the problem may rest not only on the number of policy measures adopted, but on how effectively they are implemented. App., note.
