Abstract: | Lord Boyd-Orr's statement that 'a lifetime of malnutrition and actual hunger is the lot of at least two-thirds of mankind' (Scientific American, August 1950) was misleading. This paper attempts to assess the food position in Uganda for the year 1965. Both the availability of food and the food requirements of the African population are examined. There have been earlier attempts to do this for Uganda, but for reasons similar to those which led to Boyd-Orr's miscalculation, the estimates-have been highly inaccurate. Although the best available information has been used for this paper, much of the data are still incomplete or subject to error or dispute. Consequently, the results presented are still tentative. The sources of information are given and possible errors are outlined. The picture presented applies to Uganda as a whole. Notes, tables, appendix. |
