Abstract:Because many less well-informed Nigerians have naive ideas of what management is, or of what the manager does, this paper shows the breadth of managerial functions in the Nigerian context, and how managers have a pivotal role to play in indigenizing the economy. It shows also how the growth rate of a country's gross national product is an index of the efficiency of the country's managers and the resilience of her resources. The manager is the key figure on the Nigerian development front and it is necessary for Nigeria to invest heavily in training her managers. Sections: The meaning of management - The management industry in Nigeria (The consumer organisations; The producers organisations; The service agencies) - The role of management in Nigeria (Effecting a smooth change-over from a foreign to an indigenous economy; Maintaining the stability of Nigerian organisations; Innovation and environment management; Accelerating the growth rate of the economy) - Conclusion. Notes.
