Abstract: | In the face of rising pressure and publicity from anti-apartheid groups, many American businesses have intensified their efforts to justify their presence in South Africa. The Polaroid Corporation early 1971 announced a provisional experiment in promoting change in South Africa. This experiment typifies the newest and most sophisticated I trend among liberal businessmen and politicians trying to reconcile their hypothetical abhorrence of apartheid with the lucrative and ever rising American economic involvement in South Africa. What makes Polaroid's approach a hew departure is the Corporation's willingness to take overt steps designated to help Africans. Sections: The American Corporate presence in South Africa; South African law, labor and the American Corporation; Polaroid's experiment; Enlightened 1 engagement and the structure of Apartheid.
