Abstract: | In 1974 the Medical Research Centre, Nairobi, Kenya, started the Joint Project Machakos, a longitudinal population-based study in a rural area in the northern part of Machakos District. Its aim was to study factors affecting health of mother and child. Within the framework of the project a nutrition intervention programme was carried out in 1978-1979. The programme consisted of supplementary feeding, health and nutrition education, and regular checking of the weight of the recipients. By the end of the programme there was no significant difference between the children whose mothers received nutrition education and supplementary food, and the children in the comparison group.
