| Abstract: | In the last years a questionnaire was distributed to students, mainly of the University of Ibadan, and occasionaly to those of Ahmadu Bello University and of the University of Ife, in order to discover certain facts about the distribution of Nigerian languages. After a description of how the questionnaire was composed and of the difficulties arising from the difference in usage of the linguistic terms as e.g. 'language' and 'dialect', appearing from the respondents' answers, a list of sets, each of which correlated with a particular area, is presented, Each set, was concluded, formed a language. Nine languages were found by this method: 1. Bini; 2. Esan; 3. Ora; 4. Etsako; 5. Otuo; 6. Okpameri; 7. Uneme; 8. Ukpe; 9. Ibie. A map shows the distribution of seven Edo-group languages: Esan, Etsako, Ibie, Okpameri, Ora, Otuo, Ukpe. |
