History and Exploration
Abstract:Karl and Lorenz Tutschek were German scholars who did pioneer research into the languages of the Nilotic Sudan. Karl, in 1837 tutor to one of the children of the royal family of Bavaria, became in 1838 tutor to four African boys of negroid stock, which were brought to Munich by the heir to the Bavarian throne after a cultural tour in the Middle East. The information from these African boys was studied by the brothers Tutschek in detail and provided with a German translation and commentary. They then formed the basis of the extensive publications which are listed in this paper. Karl Tutschek worked grom 1838 to 1843. His brother Lorenz published material on three African languages between 1844 and 1849 (with a brief concluding ethnographic note in 1853). In 1918 the 'Tutschekiana' were presented to the Bavarian state library. The interest shown by professional linguists, a.o. Carl Meinhof, between 1920 and 1941 in the Tutschek manuscripts shows that the material, which the Tutscheks and their Sudanese and Ethiopian informants had produced, is academically valuable.
