Abstract: | Education in the context of this article is not traditional education but the education of the Yoruba people as citizens of Nigeria and within the formal Western system of education. Since the place of Yoruba within this Western system of education typifies the place of other Nigerian languages, this article in effect makes a general appraisal of the past educational systems of Nigeria with particular reference to the role of indigenous languages. Examined is what makes Yoruba an obvious choice for the basis of such general appraisal: Yoruba as a Nigerian language - The Yoruba language educational policy: an historical survey (Yoruba 1 in mission-based education; 2. during mission-government collaboration; 3. in government-controlled education) - Suggestions on Yoruba for the future (central position in education; conditions to be fulfilled) - Wider state and national problems.
