Abstract:The change in structure of Kenyan agriculture went along several stages: 1. resettlement of the Kikuyu - 2. conversion of European Highlands into small farms for Africans - 3. making the new farms into commercially successful enterprises that can both pay off debts incurred at their creation and also provide modest incomes for the farm families. This article is not concerned with the first stage but reviewing recent literature on the second stage it gives some assessment of the prospects for the third stage. The resettlement programme of 1962 had four main strands: purchase of a little over one million acres of European-owned estates - creation of about 55.000 small farms for Africans - technical education of the new farmers - encouragement of cooperative societies among them. These topics are described. Notes, tables.
