| Abstract: | The author compares two senses of 'nationalisation' in East Africa, that of Tanzania, which is the usual Western meaning, and means putting economic resources under the control of the State, and the 'nationalisation' of Kenya, that is putting economic resources under the control of nationals. Linked to this distinction is the 'public ownership' in Tanzania, and that, which is trying to make sure that the shares of an industry are owned by the members of the public themselves. Whether the Tanzanian or the Kenyan experiment will achieved social justice first is a question which must await an asnwer in the years ahead. |
