| Abstract: | One of the primary objectives of the Zimbabwean Government elected in September 1980 was the reallocation of land. This article reviews the objectives and progress of resettlement from 1980 through 1983, discussing types of resettlement, land for resettlement, settler selection, tradeoffs between equity and production, and credit provisions for resettlement. It would appear that the land tenure policy is going to be modelled after Zambia, in which all land is owned by the Government with long-term leases to individuals outside traditional tenure boundaries. Zimbabwe's resettlement schemes to date have given fairly large amounts of land to individual families (averaging 65 ha.). It is doubtful if units of this size, with only 5 acres of arable land to individual families, can match former production levels within four years as planned. Bibliogr., notes. |
