Abstract:Concentrates on an interpretation of the situation of academic freedom as it exists at the moment. The author, who first gives a definition of the problem, believes that intellectual freedom in Africa is up against a dual tiranny: the political tyranny of governments and the Euro-centrism of academic culture. In the article the author works out these two themes. Conclusion: our institutions of higher learning should find the will to transcend external dependency and the skills to survive domestic pressures.
