| Abstract: | Address delivered at the Graduation Ceremony of the Zululand University College on May 6, 1963. With regard to the need of providing wider fields of university training to the Bantu youth the author added that there is the very real and very important question of adapting the curricula to the specific needs of the people whom these institutions are called to serve. As universities are closely bound up with the needs of the society in the midst of which they have their being, it seems to the author to be in the interest of true education that African studies should have a basic and central position in the curricula of the new colleges instead of being simply a sort of unconventional option, when it is taught at all. He sees as the ideal: An unserving loyalty to the maintenance of the international standards of scholarship; The true integration of the university colleges into the society which they have been called to serve. |
