Abstract:	A chain reaction followed the Franco-Moroccan Declaration of 2 March 1956, on which day France ended 44 years of its protectorate over Morocco: April 1956 - Spain relinquished its Northern Protectorate to Morocco; October 1956 - Transfer of the Tangier Zone to Moroccan administration; April 1958 - Spain ceded to Morocco the Southerr Protectorate (Tarfaya or Tekna). Within the Kingdom of Morocco, estimated at 186,370 aqua re miles, divided by mountains and desert, and un til recently by a lifetime of differing protectorate administrations, live some 12 million people. Their leaders have been claiming the whole of the western Sahara at the expense of their immediate neighbours as well as of countries with which Morocco has no common borders. This article examines the development of boundaries and claims in and this region. Footnotes; maps.
