Abstract:The growing problem of open urban unemployment in the developing countries covers also the growing disparities in income between those who cm find jobs and those who cannot and the threat to political and social stability which the lack of job opportunities carries with it. This paper studies the employment problem in Rhodesia where it is accentuated by that of race. The discussion centres on the part which may be assigned to the rapid growth of wages as a short-team explanation of unemployment in the developing countries. Part 1 gives a brief historical background of the legal institutions determining and regulating wages - particularly African wages; Part 2 deals with the relationship between wages and employment in Rhodesia - both African and White employment and wages; Part 3 deals with the implications on African employment in the future.
