Abstract: | The first section raises some of the theoretical issues concerning women in a capitalist system. After locating women in the South African labour force, the next section examines occupational sectors which are important for the employment of women (industry, agriculture, domestic service, the clerical sector) in terms of two major influences on South African women: the exploitation of Black people as a source of cheap labour and the oppression of women within the practice of patriarchal ideology which mediates their relationship to wage labour.
