Abstract: | This paper has two purposes: 1) to provide a accurate dating of 18th century Portuguese settlements in southeast central Africa in the light of recent research, and 2) to show that attempts by contemporary archeologists to use these settlements to date the indigenous sites in the region have suffered, partly from an ascription to the methodology of a degree of accuracy unjustified by empirical evidence.
