Abstract: | The author, internationally renowned expert on gold and former South African High Commissioner in London, in this article turns his thoughts back to his history studies at the beginning of the century. He looks at the 'exceedingly sparse' indigenous population of Southern Africa in the 17th century, and the question of 'less than 13 percent of the area of the Republic ... settled by the original Black colonizers'. He writes of the migrations into what is now South Africa from the north and the south, which eventually colonized the country. |
