Abstract:This article reviews the system of structural adjustment lending by the World Bank (which aims at assisting poor nations in overcoming existing financial and economic imbalances which are seen to be the result of domestic policy inadequacies) and examines the possible consequences of such a loan to Malawi, one of the poorest of the East African group of nations. The conclusion is that it is rather doubtful whether the provision of a structural adjustment loan to Malawi will lead to a resumption of economic growth. Notes, ref.
