| Abstract: | Generations of legend scholars have upheld the observations that the legend is related to the märchen, that it is often connected to a locale, and that it may have historic validity. Such characterizations, however, do not describe the generic form, style, meaning, or function of the legend. Here the author examines six characteristics of the legend: its form, style, structure, content, setting, and function as described in contemporary scholarship. Notes, ref. |
