Abstract: | There are several ways of interpreting the three sharp turns in Mauritanian foreign policy which drew attention in 1965 (the withdrawal from the francophone OCAM, the recognition of Communist China, and the assignment of the Foreign Affairs and Defense portfolios to Mohammed Ould Cheikh) According to the author the first basic guideline for Mauritanian foreign policy is the 'policy of the bridge', by which the country portrays itself as a link between Negro and Arab Africa; the second guideline is a penchant for radical friends, which stems from domestic radicalism. |
