Abstract: | Contemporary observers and historians alike have laid particular stress on the chaos resulting from the expansion of the slave trade into certain areas of eastern Africa, but have paid considerable less attention to the emergence of a new social order in some of those regions as a consequence of this expansion. This study of 'the principal agents of disruption' the African followers of the slave traders, demonstrates how an emerging social system significantly altered the live patterns of the indigenous African peoples of the Hanyema region of eastern Zaire.
