Abstract: | Every observer of the Sudan has commented on the inability of Islam to advance up the Nile. The reasons for this failure lie as much with the historical development of the Southern Sudanese people as with the policies of the imperial rulers of the Sudan during the Condominium. The most profound and deeply rooted tradition among the Southern Sudanese people has been their consistent resistance to outsiders. The Islamic factor was an important corollary in the overall defense of British Africa so that the containment of Islam within the parameters of the Middle East became an essential policy for the maintenance of the British imperium in East Africa. |
