Abstract: | The fight for women's emancipation in the Arab world is gaining momentum. Thanks to the modernizing effects of economic development, the determination of feminist movements and the wisdom of governments to respond to change, current reforms are making their way into a surprising amount of social and economic territory. Literature on Arab development continues to dwell on the more negative aspects. Platitudes, and misconceptions have prompted implausible or insensitive policy recommendations which failed to appreciate the overwhelming importance of the family and traditional sources of women's power gained through devotion to the family. After dispelling some of the myths about women's opportunities and participation in the Arab economy, the author considers both barriers and possibilities open to augmenting skills that exist or are in demand. His search for selective interventions shuns the typical negative stance on 'suppressed Arab women' by emphasizing a positive approach to changes in the area and identifies situations where selective interventions can help the women now.
