| Abstract: | The Gold Coast Labour Department wa first established in April, 1938. The first task of the inangura1 Chief Inspector of Labour Captain J.R. Dickinson was a survey of labour conditions in the Gold Coast. The report on that survey covers wages and the cost of living for unskilled labourers and provides a convenient introduction to a review of the changes in the real wages of unskilled labourers in the past 20 years. Subsequent annual reports of the Labour Department contain some attempt to assess the cost of livingin later years. More recently indices of retail prices in Accra based on the budget of the manual labourer, have become availabl. An attempt is here made to compare these indices of the cost of living with the wage rates which have prevailed. Tables. |
