Abstract: | Aim is to show that anthropological insights bearing on the structure and interpretation of ritual can illuminate and enrich understanding of the nature and meaning of visual art forms, in this case masks, which appear in many black African rituals. After the introduction three questions are raised: Why masks at all? Why the particular character of masks? And what does the masked ritual say? The author draws on the work of A. Alland, D. Fraser, M. Jedrej, E. Leach, C. Lévi-Strauss, S. Ottenberg and V. Turner. Notes, ref. |
