Abstract: | Based on a medico-ethnological study and on interviews conducted in both rural and urban areas during a series of working visits to different West African countries, the present paper discusses some of the more concrete aspects of excision: the act of excision itself; its medical aspects; a brief outline of its origins, justifications and meanings; the gulf between the partial and theoretical opinions expressed by those who favour continuing the practice and the real life experience of excision by African women.
