Abstract: | This paper focuses attention on the Forestry Ordinance of 1901 in the then Colony and Protectorate of Lagos which was perhaps one of the first attempted legislation to open up the sylvan resources of south-western Nigeria to colonial control. It examines the economic background to the legislation, the reaction and responses of the indigenous community and of some interested groups in Britain and the final modifications which ultimately took the teeth out of the original proposal. - Notes, tab. |
