Abstract:	In spite of the wide and varied use of English in Nigeria todays it must be recognised that Nigeria's contact with the English language is not very old, nor has the language been uniformly established in all parts of the country and with the same level of proficiency. In this paper, the author looks at the way in which English came to be established in Nigeria and its development since its first foothold to the time when it became a medium of instruction in schools, the historical, linguistic and sociological factors that aided or impeded its development in several parts of the country, and the relationship between English and the many other languages spoken in Nigeria.
