Abstract:This paper examines the policy which France pursued in developing education in the four territories of French Equatorial Africa (Congo, Gabon, Oubangui-Chari, and Chad) in order to promote the objectives of the UN and of its own political system. The aim is to contribute to a better understanding of the consequences of French educational policy for the development of the four Equatorial African states both during the postwar period of decolonization and during the subsequent quarter-century of political independence. Before turning to the period after the Second World War, the author briefly reviews the main aspects of the previous development of western education within its geographical and demographic contexts as well as its political and economic settings. - Notes, tab.
