| Abstract: | In the course of the 19th century the foundations were laid for the creation of a modern colonial state in Guinea-Bissau. The process of abolishing the slave trade and the establishment of a colonial economy necessitated a new managerial and administrative infrastructure. The present study deals with some aspects of this transitionary process, particularly the manner in which precolonial political structures in northern Guinea-Bissau (the Kaabu kingdom) were incorporated into the new colonial political system, and the role of the state in the development of a colonial economy. The main focus is on the introduction of peanut production for export. Bibliogr., notes, ref. |
