Abstract:This article examines the development of the palm kernel export sector of the Sierra Leone economy in the first half of the 20th century. The author tries to show that while export of this commodity increased, no long term effort was effectively pursued to sustain this growth. Therefore the upward trend in export of palm kernel, which is explained by the vent-for-surplus theory, was not towards a lasting benefit for the country. Notes, table.
