Abstract:In Sudan, as in many parts of Africa, the Gospel was preached and the Church planted in local communities, not by missionaries, but by national converts. In this collective volume, the stories of many such and men and women are told. The first section covers a number of early converts in the 19th century, mainly in connection with the Catholic Mission to Central Africa, and includes the stories of Sister Josephine Bakhita, Sister Mary Josephine Zeinab, Daniel Sorur Farim Deng, Salim Charles Wilson, and Ibrahim Abdel Messieh. Many of those who embraced the Christian faith in this early period were freed slaves. The second section tells the stories of a number of men and women who worked as evangelists and teachers at the rural and local level, in Opari (Andrea Vuni Walle), among the Zande (Manase Mbaraza Zindo), among the Moru (Andarea Avurusi Apaya, Elizabeta William), among the Kresh in Raga (Lina Madikotò), among the Jur (Jonathan Mamuru), and in the Upper Nile, among the Ng'ok Dinka (Lual Ayei). The third section recounts the life stories of martyrs and prophets, beginning in 1964 after missionaries were removed from Sudan and the Sudan Army felt much freer to deal ruthlessly with the South. These include Father Archangelo Ali, Father Barnaba Deng, Baptist Mufighi, Ireneo Dud, Elinana Jabi Ngalamu, Father Saturnino Lohure, and the Reverend Yohanna Tia Kuwa. Authors: Sepana A. Abuyi, William B. Anderson, Neno Contran, Samuel E. Kayanga, Francis Pierli, Marc Nikkel, Marie Terese Ratti, Martin Shaw, Andrew C. Wheeler, Daniel M. Zindo.
