Abstract:Relates to qualified high-level manpower employed in science 5 engineering and technology 3 medicine, agriculture as at 31-12-1967. Main purpose: to take statistical inventory of qualified manpower in these fields and to study its dispersal in the various sectors of the economy. An earlier version of the material was used by the Cockcroft Committee (Report of the Committee of Experts to Advise on the future of the Ghana Academy of Sciences. Dec. 1966. Accra, 1967).The survey shows that Ghana was among the leading A.frican countries with regard to scientists/population ratio but half the number of scientists were expatriate. Largest employer of scientists was the General Govt. Sector, followed by the Business Enterprise Sector and the Higher Education Sector. Applied research is conducted mainly in the General Govt. Sector. In order to raise productivity in the directly productive sectors of the economy, the scientists/labour ratio should be increased. Ref., tables.
