Abstract: | Given the present age distribution of Kenya's population - roughly a half of the total under 16 years - the numbers reaching maturity in the next: two decades will expand the labour force enormously. It is a formidable task to provide productive work opportunities for this group. If any proposition about the next two decades can be advanced with reasonable assurance it must surely be that the labour requirements of non-agricultural employment will be insufficient to accomodate the natural increment in the population of working age. This follows from the limited growth in the demand for labour in the early stages of industrial expansion. While governments are well-advised to encourage the build-up of an industrial base, expansion in this direction cannot be expected to make significant impact on the demand for labour for a considerable time to come. In Kenya's case, the prospects are not brightened by the apparent imminent disruption of the E. Afr. Common Market. In short, agriculture must be relied upon to absorb larger numbers white simultaneously increasing productivity. References; tables. |
