Abstract: | A sample of 141 Nigerian factory workers from four factories (Metal Containers, Metal Construction, both in Lagos, Nigerian Bottling Company, Lafia Canning Factory, both in Ibadan) was investigated in 1965. The sample only represents a random sample of these four factories and not of all factory workers in Nigeria. The interview schedule utilized both forced-choice and open-ended questions. No attempt was made to use composite indices. Contingency distributions constituted the main statistical tool of analysis while statistical significance was ascertained by means of chi-square and derivative tests. Significance level was set at the .05 level. In addition field notes were taken in the classic anthropological style, later used to support or deny statistical findings. Records of the factories were investigated and labour union organizational structures were probed. Notes, tables. |
