Abstract:In the literature on the mass society the concern for alienated labour is perhaps the central theme. From two quite distinct propositions 1) alienated work is typical of modern society, 2) alienated work has consequences, a number of propositions can be drawn through which a general theme can be identified. The generalization theme: Without work all life goes rotten. But when work is soulless life stifles and dies' (Camus). Focussing on the 'alienation has consequences' feature an effort is made here to test the generalization theme. The data are based on interviews carried out among a sample of male work force in Port Harcourt in the Rivers State of Nigeria from July 1970 to May 1971- Sections: The problem - The methodology - Results - Summary and conclusions. Notes, tables.
