Abstract: | It is clear that economic necessity propels most of the African women into wage labour, often reluctantly. As section 1 demonstrates: 95% of the working women have children, 65% have pre-school children. In the following section the authors show how ineffective South African protective legislation is. This refers to maternity rights, to protection from working in an environment specifically dangerous for women, and to restrictions on overtime and nightwork. The next section focuses on management practices relating to the tension experienced by many women in their roles as mothers and workers. It ends with a description of types of childcare arrangements and of the politics of childcare. - Notes. |
