Abstract:In the past year in South Africa a number of unions have started to consider the question of maternity rights for their women members, and some have negotiated for such rights. This article looks at the major issues around maternity rights and at the broader question of protective legislation for women, which refers to restrictions specifically on overtime and nightwork, and protection from working in a dangerous environment. It starts with a description of protective legislation in Western Europe. Ref., tab.
