Abstract: | Based upon data collected during 679 main interviews and 258 supplementary interviews in 26 of the 32 markets in the city. The authors' aim is to identify the changes in business techniques and practices of traders in response to the changing scale of urbanization and the relationship between the various business techniques and entrepreneurial success. The paper deals with the demographic and social structure of the participants and their relationship to traditional marketing. Other issues examined include whether or not experience (years in trade) is related to success, whether or not capital measured in current stock bears any relationship to net earnings, and also the major constraints on expansion.
