Abstract:A great deal of work has been carried out in recent years in preparing what purport to be 'simplified' or 'graded' materials for the use of the new literates being produced through a number of literacy programmes. The literacy programmes themselves have been developed from the basis of a primer or primers exhibiting a greater or lesser degree of control in their preparation. Examination of primers and readers, however, shows that the writers have, in general, been unaware of the fairly extensive body of research in the Amharic language which should have been applied in the course of book design. This paper is intended to summarise the information available and to outline the principles underlying the preparation of graded written Amharic. Notes; bibl.
